Heron

This willow sculpture greets visitors on the Barnstaple road. It was our first artistic commission back in 1999. The project involved local artists Geoff Stainthorp and Duncan Bachell, as well as willow artist Serena De La Hey. Geoff crafted the metal skeleton, Serena tutored us on weaving its ‘skin’ and Duncan planted the live willow ‘habitat’. ‘Heron’ was ceremoniously burnt in 2004 – the ‘skin’ weathers over time – a new bird soon appearing phoenix-like from the flames. This verge is being enhanced as a wildlife corridor. We have planted a large number of wildflowers such as Primrose, the county flower.
